Guardians of The Galaxy is the latest film to come out of Marvel studios, it also is probably their best yet. Guardians is set in space, which is a departure from the main Marvel movies which are mostly set in Earth and Asgard. The movie starts with a young Peter “Starlord” Quill (Chris Pratt) being abducted by aliens outside a hospital just after his mother has died. It then fast forwards twenty five years into the future where he is now a [somewhat] notorious outlaw. Soon after a cool sequence where Starlord dances his way to an orb he’s about to steal he meets all the characters you’ve seen in the trailers.

The soundtrack in this film is one of the greatest I’ve seen in a long time. Even if you’re not going to see the film its well worth buying the soundtrack. It includes many memorable classic pop/ rock songs such as Spirit in The Sky and Moonage Daydream. The best thing about the soundtrack is that it actually plays a role in the film. All the songs are from a mixtape titled “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” that Peter’s mother gave him.

Most of the actors are fairly strong in this film but Dave Batista was definitely the weakest of the lot. Although he pulls off some good gags he just isn’t a great actor. I also thought that Karen Gillan’s character (Nubula) wasn’t fleshed out enough. She had the potential to be awesome but she just didn’t get enough screen time. I also thought Lee Pace’s Ronan wasn’t fleshed out enough. He wasn’t an effective villain. He was just present for a few battles and was giving off a menacing vibe. Although there is one very memorable scene with him at the end.

The special effects are very good, with the CGI of Groot and Rocket and that of the massive spaceship battles it all looking very cool.

The jokes were often hilarious and at times had the whole cinema laughing. “I am Groot” could be the next “Hodor”!
